FAQs About Chiropractic Adjustments Answered by a Lakeville, MN, Chiropractor

Chiropractic alignments are depicted on TV. You’ll see a fellow or lady standing over the table with the patient face down on the table. Often, it’s bada bing, bada boom, and the patient gets up feeling like a new person. This TV depiction of a chiropractor and chiropractic care is a bit misleading, though. But, our Lakeville, MN, chiropractor can help you better understand the adjustment process and how it can benefit you.

What Is an Adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is a technique chiropractors use to realign the vertebrae and discs in your back. During an adjustment, the practitioner either moves your vertebrae gently, yet forcefully, through manual manipulation or will use specialized tools that make this process easier and more effective.

Is an Alignment Painful?

While it may seem as though this process would be painful, considering the bones in your spine are being moved, this treatment doesn’t tend to cause pain. Usually, you won’t experience any long-term side effects, either.

How Long Does a Chiropractic Adjustment Take?

For the plot’s purpose, you’ll notice that a chiropractic adjustment on TV takes a matter of minutes, and the person exits the office feeling better than ever. However, this isn’t the case in real life.

A chiropractic alignment may take up to 30 minutes. A first-time visit is usually a bit longer. Firstly, you’ll need to fill out your medical history report and talk to the practitioner about your specific problems. Then, before any treatments are given, the practitioner has to review your medical history and determine an appropriate course of action.

Do You Receive Instant Benefits from Chiropractic Care?

You may notice some differences after a chiropractic adjustment. The results of the adjustment aren’t always long-lasting after one or two adjustments. Often, it takes multiple visits to experience a noticeable difference, and you won’t experience long-lasting results until you’ve undergone multiple adjustments in most cases.

How Many Chiropractic Adjustments Will You Need?

Although there isn’t a golden number of alignments suitable for every patient, on average, you can expect to get between four and 12 alignments for you to see full results.

Our chiropractor in Lakeville will carefully analyze your condition, medical history, and response to the treatment to determine the ideal number for you.

Keep in mind that the target number may increase or decrease as you go through the treatment, depending on how well you’re doing.

Can You See a Medical Doctor for Treatment While Seeing a Chiropractor?

Fortunately, if you have an injury or chronic condition causing you pain and possibly other unpleasant symptoms, a chiropractor, primary care physician (PCP), orthopedist, etc. may be able to help.

When you go to your PCP, you may receive lifestyle advice to assist with the pain. The practitioner may provide you with a prescription to ease the pain. Part of the treatment may even be a referral to a physical therapist. With an orthopedist, you may receive medical advice, as well as physical therapy, and maybe even a prescription for an analgesic.

The treatment approaches may overlap a bit, but in general, you’ll receive two different care plans. You’ll never receive a prescription from a chiropractor. Therefore, as a general rule, standard medical care and chiropractic care will not interact with one another. You should, however, let the other practitioner know any care you’re receiving from another type of specialist to avoid overlap or possible complications.

Are Chiropractic Adjustments Safe for Kids?

Yes, chiropractic adjustments are safe for kids. Our Lakeville chiropractor always customizes the treatment to each patient. Adjustments use gentle movements, so it isn’t strenuous on the child’s body.

Chiropractic alignments, or adjustments, whichever you prefer to call them, can benefit you if you have pain, a limited range of motion, headaches, or difficulty sleeping. As a general rule, they’re safe and tailored to each patient’s needs.
